It is Masters week and the anticipation at Lind Golf and around the world is growing for the 75th Masters Tournament.

The crowds are already gathering to watch the world’s top golfers practice as they prepare to take on each other and the intimidating Augusta National Golf Course.

A firm favourite of the crowd during the practice rounds is the par 3 challenge on the Wednesday. It is a 9 hole 1,060yard par 27 that plays over the DeSoto Springs pond and Ike’s Pond, the contest is very social with the players children quite often caddying for them. It was first played in 1960 and since then there has been 72 hole-in-ones with a record 5 in 2002. The course record of 20 is held by Art Wall (1965) and Gary Brewer (1973) but the most significant stat of all, is that no winner of the Par 3 Contest has ever gone on to win the masters.

Another Masters tradition during the opening three rounds of practice is the ball skimming contest, this occurs on the 16th hole where golfers attempt to skip their ball across the lake onto the green. No one is really sure how this came about but nevertheless it has become a favourite routine of players and patrons alike.

Some Lind Golf Favourites:

Phil Mickelson could be the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world next Monday. So too could five other golfers currently in the top 7 in the world rankings. Any one of them will overtake the top spot in the rankings should they win the 2011 Masters Tournament at Augusta this week.

Fresh off his win at the Houston Open over the weekend, Mickelson seems to be the favourite to win the Masters and move into that No. 1 spot. He is currently ranked third in the world. But there are others who will have their chance, as well. Martin Kaymer, who is currently ranking No. 1, will obviously keep that spot should he win at Augusta. But should Lee Westwood, Mickelson, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell or Tiger Woods win the Masters, they will overtake Kaymer.

The Masters tees off on Friday, and clearly there is more up for grabs this year than just the honour of being fitted for a green jacket.

Lind Golf Predictions:

Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood finished one and two at Augusta last year, and we very well could see a repeat of that this weekend. Lefty is the overall favourite, which I feel is nice bang for the buck. Westwood, who was ranked No. 1 in the world from October 31, 2010 to February 26, 2011, is the best golfer on the planet who hasn’t won a major. Westwood finished as the runner-up at the Masters and The Open Championship last year and has third place finishes at the U.S. Open (2008) and the PGA Championship (2009). I don’t think a major championship can elude him much longer. Even though Lefty doesn’t offer as much return on your money, he may still be hard to resist. He enters this year’s Masters with a ton of momentum after winning the Shell Houston Open last week. Plus, he has finished 10th or better in this tournament 11 of the last 12 years, winning the Green Jacket three times in this span.

You can rest assured all of the big guns will be chasing the prized number 1 spot over the weekend.

Masters 2011 Pairings

For the first time in a long time, a group with Tiger Woods does not become must-see TV in April at Augusta National.

The 99-player field at the Masters leads off the 2011 majors, but only a handful of groups show potential for intriguing headlines.

Here are the top pairings you should watch on Thursday.

Gold medal:

A 2011 Masters winner might come out of group No. 6 with Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott and Nick Watney. Johnson could have won the 2010 U.S. Open and the PGA Championship if not for a Sunday blow-up and a two-stroke penalty on the 72nd hole, respectively. Johnson has characteristics of a perennial PGA Tour superstar. If he contends for two more majors in 2011, it shouldn’t surprise anyone. Scott, in a way, was Johnson three years ago. Many golf analysts likened Scott to Tiger Woods because of his effortless power and potential.

However, Scott had a David Duval-like breakdown and missed the cut in three out of four majors in 2009.

He rebounded in 2010, finishing as high at tied for 18th at the Masters, but it’s not his potential comeback that makes it interesting.

Martin Kaymer, the world's No. 1 golfer, looks forward to making the cut at the Masters for the first time.

Scott, who traditionally has struggled with his putting, will be donning a sternum putter instead of a traditional 35-inch blade. The long putter might answer the only weakness of Scott’s game.

Watney, in his own right, has improved his game to another level and recorded a career-best eight top-10 finishes in 2010.

He played well in the Masters and the British Open last year with a seventh and tied seventh finish, respectively.

Silver medal:

Group No. 14 with Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Matt Kuchar may represent the hottest three golfers in the last six months.

The world’s first, second and 10th ranked players, respectively, come into the 2011 PGA Tour season with higher expectations than ever.

Kaymer, however, has never made the cut at the Masters. Westwood added another second-place finish at a major last year’s Masters. Kuchar has never replicated his 1998 Masters success as an amateur, either.

All three are expected to do well, but all three have something to prove at Augusta National with their newfound world rankings.

Bronze medal:

Group No. 14 with Padraig Harrington, Ryo Ishikawa and Bill Haas will quickly be every golf fan's sentimental favourite.

Ryo Ishikawa said he will donate all of his 2011 winnings to Japan's earthquake relief. Ishikawa said he would donate all 2011 earnings to Japan’s earthquake relief. For a cause like that, the Japanese native has become a player to watch, not as the next potential Asian golf superstar but because of this wonderful cause.

Harrington will look back at a time when he won back-to-back majors after Woods' departure in 2008. It has been headaches and poor performances since then, but "Paddy" still remains to be a candidate for a bounce-back year.

Other close calls:

Group No. 27 with Fred Couples, Luke Donald and Steve Stricker represent a group of golfers that have consistently played well throughout their careers without flash.

However, if you want to see golf played the right way without any mental mistakes, this is the group to follow. Plus, is there a smoother tempo in golf than Couples' boom-boom swing?

A grouping that may be dubbed "The Future," Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day in group No. 10 represent a new crop of players that could replace the Wood-Mickelson era.

None of these players will be favourites to win for a while, but that might change within the next four years.

Lind Golf was proud to be part sponsor of the Sydney Roosters Annual Golf Day which was held at The Coast golf course on the 16th of February 2011.

The Nearest-the-Pin and Longest Drive contests were held on the 12th and 13th holes respectively. The Roosters players and sponsors had the opportunity to have a hit with the Lind Golf drivers and irons, they could do this with the knowledge that if they didn't hit a good shot they could take a mulligan and hit another ball. Needless to say our Lind golf clubs were warmly received, with many of the days golfers bending the rules just so they could have another hit with our clubs.

The Nearest-the-Pin was held on the par 3, 12th and the pin was peppered all day with many golfers hitting great shots on to the green, but none could match the accuracy of one Matt Thomas, who nearly bagged a hole in one only for the ball to run over the lip of the hole and halt a mere 70cm away. Matt won a complete set of Mi9 Custom Irons which he was thrilled about.

Daniel Conn with his nearest-the-pin attempt

The Longest Drive hole was the par 4, 13th, which ranked the hardest on the course and conditions were best for the early golfers, with little to no breeze. As the morning wore on a slight breeze pushed into the faces of our golfers although it probably wouldn't have mattered as Braith Anasta, swing looking as good as ever, crushed his drive a huge 285m, straight down the middle of the fairway. There was not much to follow apart from a gallant effort from Jared Waerea-Hargreaves who sent his ball an impressive 280m falling just short of his captain. Braith Anasta won a customised MiOne driver with our extra stiff shaft to help with that ultra-fast swing he has.

Braith Anasta wins the longest drive

On the Beat-the-Pro hole where players had a chance to beat the club pro in a closest to the pin competition, our own James Mooring took up the challenge. So with his custom made Sniper irons James gently landed the ball 125cm from the hole with the pro driving long past, a great win for Lind Golf and our new Team Captain James Mooring.

All in all, the day was a complete success with some great golf played mixed in with a lot of humour. Following on from the day, we have since heard that a number of the players want to come down and get sized up for some clubs (pictures to follow once they have come in)

We were proud to be a part of the day and wish the Sydney Roosters all the best in the upcoming season in the hope they can go one better then 2010.

Go you Roosters!!

Enjoy some pictures from the day's play…

Matthias Schwab, a 15 year old kid from Austria, stole the limelight somewhat from eventual winner Jose Manuel Lara at last weeks Austrian Open. Schwab produced the best ever performance by a 15 year old on The European Tour; his closing 75 leaving him in a share of 32nd.

The Austrian schoolboy, playing on a special sponsors invitation, was within 5 shots of the lead going into Sunday's final round, after shooting successive 69's. Unfortunately Schwab faltered a little in the final round, shooting a 75, but the young Austrian definitely got the golf world's attention and they are sure to be on the look out for him in the next few years.

Whats even more amazing is that Matthias has a younger brother of 14, whom apparently has every bit as much talent as his older brother. Johannes recently came Third in the prestigious English Boys Championship and the future certainly looks bright for his golfing future as well. Don't forget the Schwab name, because these 2 brothers will certainly be making big waves in the golfing world for many years to come and if their practice routine is as difficult as it looks in the pictures below, winning golf tournaments will not be a problem.

Dustin Johnson has won the BMW Championship after shooting a final round 2-under 69 to edge out Englishman Paul Casey by 1 shot. Johnson, who is affectionately known as DJ by his friends said that the victory will go a long way in removing the bitter taste of being sensationally disqualified from last months US PGA Championship, "To finally get it done, especially after all the things I've gone through this summer … it can't feel any better," said Johnson.

Johnson now moves into 2nd place on the FedEx Cup standings, giving him the power to control his own destiny, a win in next weeks Tour Championship will give him a guaranteed win of the FedEx Cup. All of the players in the top 5 will win the FedEx Cup should they win next week, the other 25 can still win it, but it will depend on the make-up of the final leaderboard. The other players in the top 5 are Matt Kuchar (1), Charlie Hoffman (3), Steve Stricker (4) and Paul Casey (5).

Out of the Aussies, Jason Day has a very realistic chance of victory, ranking 6th going into the Tour Championship, Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy are both in the top-15, and Robert Allenby snuck into the top-30 ranking 27th.

The most noticeable absentee next week will be defending FedEx Cup Champion and World number 1 Tiger Woods. Tiger did not do enough to crack the top-30 and it is the first time in his career he has not been eligible for a tournament. "That's just the way it is, I didn't play well early in the year, and I didn't play well in the middle of the year" commented Woods, who will now have time to continue improving before the Ryder Cup which gets under way in 2 weeks. In a worrying sign for Corey Pavin, his other 2 captains picks, Stewart Cink and Ricky Fowler also failed to qualify for next weeks Tour Championship.

Defending Champion: Steve Stricker (U.S.A)

The race for the 2010 FedEx cup is heating up and this week the top 100 remaining golfers will tee up in Boston to continue their quest to win golfs greatest pay day. Last week was exciting from start to finish, with Matt Kuchar producing a stunning shot in the play off to win The Barclays and become the leader in the FedEx cup. After this week the field for the BMW Championship will be cut to 70, so it is important that all players in the field produce some good golf in order to assure they progress further. As you can see below, Kuchar has a healthy lead, but Steve Stricker who is defending champion this week is easily within striking distance.

Fed-Ex Cup Points Race

Matt Kuchar (3,937),

Steve Stricker (2,572),

Martin Laird (1,977),

Justin Rose (1,860),

Ernie Els (1,851).

This tournament is also very important for other reasons for the American players, as it will be the last chance for them to impress Corey Pavin before he chooses his 4 captains picks for next months Ryder Cup. During the week Monty announced his captains picks for the Europeans, some of them were a little unexpected so it will be interesting to see which way Pavin will go and whether or not he will pick world number 1 Tiger Woods, who after a disappointing year, missed out on automatic qualification.

European Ryder Cup team:
Lee Westwood (England)
Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland)
Martin Kaymer (Germany)
Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland)
Ian Poulter (England)
Ross Fisher (England)
Francesco Molinari (Italy)
Peter Hanson (Sweden)
Miguel Angel Jimenez (Spain)
Luke Donald (England)
Padraig Harrington (Ireland)
Edoardo Molinari (Italy)

Lind Golfs Predicted winner: Steve Stricker

Steve Stricker is in great form at the moment, coming off a 3rd place finish last week and he is now sitting 2nd on the FedEx cup standings, not to mention he is the defending champion of the Deutche Bank Championship. He also has a terricic record in the FedEx cup playoff events, with eight top 10s in 13 events.

Lind Golfs Predicted Top Australian: Adam Scott

This was a hard choice, Adam has been very impressive of late, but so has Jason Day. The reason we decided to go with Scott was simply because he is playing well and is a past champion at TPC Boston. I think it is only a matter of time before Scott wins another USPGA event and given his form of late this could be his week. Don't be suprised if Day has a better week, but I am confident Adam Scott will be there abouts come Sunday.
